More Candles, Please!

©By Dr. David Randolph

We wondered if we should light a candle

At Shelldance.

We decided against it.

We were not sure about the fire code

And the timing.

But as darkness fell on the Festival

The hostess went from table to table

Lighting candles.

Faces became clearer

And we smiled at one another.

The room glowed with new possibilities

A candle will be lit

Planned or unplanned.

Darkness will fall.

A 12-year-old boy taking a piano lesson in his home

Will be struck by a stray bullet from a robber and paralyzed.

But that boy Christopher Rodriguez will resume his piano lessons

And one day he will roll his wheel chair to the front of the Oakland court room

Where the robber has just been sentenced to 70 years to life in prison.

He will tell that robber what is on his heart.

Face to face, Christopher says, “I forgive you.”

Darkness will fall.

But A Candle will be lit.

A stray bullet will wound a boy. But he will find the grace to go on and forgive.

A mother will nurse her shattered son back to music.

Poets will say, “Stop the War!” and start the music with a nationwide tour

A scholar will seek the truth and speak it in a night of lies

A preacher will bring good news to the poor with bread and music

A writer will share the story of the Homeless in Petaluma

And help them find hope and food and housing

A counselor will care for caregivers and keep the music playing.

Darkness will fall.

But a candle will be lit.

The only question is,

Will that candle be yours?

“More Candles In the Dark,” a publication of New Way Media both online and in print, is a space, real and virtual, where people of good will can join together and stake out common ground concerning the problems that face us all.

The future of the planet is in our hands. For now, let us put aside our differences and disagreements. Maybe we’ll have time to discuss these later. Maybe not. Now is the time to affirm our common humanity, our essential innate human goodness, and, despite our differences of opinion, give one another the benefit of the doubt, and to affirm the supposition that each and every one of us is doing, or, at the least, seeking to do, the best we can, for ourselves and our fellows, by our own lights.

We at New Way Media advocate no Doomsday scenario. Whatever the future may or may not hold, take a look around. It doesn’t take a rocket scientist to see that the world is one great, big mess. On that we can all almost certainly agree. But it doesn’t have to be this way!

This month, and in the coming months, New Way Media will be publishing poems and other artworks on this blog written and created by people who are not afraid to look into the heart of darkness, and...light a candle.

Response to More Candles!

Dear Friends,
The response to our call for submissions for "More Candles, Please!" has
been overwhelming in quality and quantity. I thank each of you who
contributed. My special thanks go to David Madgalene who sent out the
call so persuasively.

We now have more than enough material for publication so we are no longer
accepting submissions. We will have to push our publication date till
later and we will keep you updated on that.

Each contributor to the publication will retain their rights to their
material of course and be credited with their authorship and
responsibility for its originality. Each author will receive one
complimentary copy. We expect the selections to appear in one book with
more than 3 authors following MLA guidelines.

Please let me know if you have any questions or suggestions as soon as
possible.

Cheers!
